Don’t forget to add these tips to your hair care regime this fall…


1. Go Warmer in Color

Typically hair is lighter in the summer months and slightly darker during the cold months, which means your dyed tresses could probably use a touch up… as long as the touch up doesn’t include bleach. If you’re blonde, experiment with caramel and golden hues as these will give your, by now probably slightly paler, complexion a fresh glow. If you’re brunette, opt for natural-looking high and low-lights. While coloring isn’t the best thing for the overall health of your hair, we know most women do it. So going a little darker is not only a popular fall trend, but the safest since it’s bleach-free!

2. Try a Clarifying Shampoo

Summer can leave a lot of build-up at your roots – styling products, salt sprays, sunscreens, and sand can all cause greasy, limp roots. Start the new season off right by giving your scalp a good detox by using a clarifying shampoo once every two weeks. Disclaimer: If you color your hair, use a clarifying shampoo for color treated hair. Ask your hair care professional.

3. Deep Condition

We can’t forget to do this once the hot days of summer are gone. Use safe oil treatments and natural oils to restore moisture and elasticity to your sun dried tresses and follow up with a deep conditioning treatment based on your scalp and hair type. A deep conditioning treatment is best done after clarifying and will result in restored, soft and supple hair. Talk to your hair care professional on what treatments would be best for you.

4. Trim the Ends

Split ends are definitely not something you should take with you into next season, so book an appointment with your stylist and have those dead ends taken care of. You can opt for a full haircut in case you’ve been skipping your appointments all summer, or just have the ends dusted. This is an easy tip, giving you that fresh look without significantly affecting your length.

5. Massage

If you happen to notice more shedding around this time, pay attention to this tip… A relaxing 10 to 15 minute massage will increase the blood circulation in your scalp, speeding up new growth and will help give you a healthier head of hair in the long run! Do not be alarmed if your shedding increases initially; these hairs are, in fact, “ready to go” and the sooner they do, the better. 5 Ways To Repair Post-Summer Damage

Chlorine is known for leaving hair dry and dull. A swim cap can help significantly in protecting your hair from chlorine, but let’s face it, most of us aren’t willing to go to that length-at least not in public.

True to its name, saltwater contains salt along with other minerals, like chloride and magnesium, which can rough up the cuticle layer and cause the hair shaft to swell and feel dry.

To minimize the damage from exposure to saltwater, wash your hair with a gentle shampoo as soon as you get home. Try one with a cushiony lather.

Sun-Bleached Tresses

Too much sun exposure can be nearly as bad for hair as it is for skin. When sunlight hits hair, it immediately begins breaking down your hairs protective cuticle layer. As the sun exposure breaks down hair’s cuticle layer, it exposes the delicate inner portion of the hair, which is even more vulnerable to damage, including color loss. Such damage is especially noticeable in the case of dyed hair.

Time to go shopping for some cute summer hats! Wearing a hat to protect your hair from sunlight is certainly a smart option for days when you’ll be outdoors for an extended period of time; however we realize that not everyone is a hat person, and it is not always convenient for all situations. Thankfully, research has shown that using leave-on products with silicones can help limit the fading of hair dye due to sun exposure. So, slick a silicone serum or spray through your hair before hitting the beach.

SPF-Enhanced Hair Care

Ongoing sun exposure will gradually weaken your hair, allowing it to break more easily and leading to a change in texture from silky-smooth to dry and rough. Overall, hair becomes dry, frizzy, and generally a lot less manageable from the cascade of damage.

To combat this damage, try misting your hair with an alcohol-based spray-on sunscreen rated SPF 25 or greater. Although it’s true that alcohol isn’t the best for hair, it evaporates quickly and keeps the active sunscreen ingredients from weighing hair down. Do this as the last step once your hair is styled, just like applying hairspray, and reapply throughout the day when you know you’ll be in the sun for long periods.

DIY Hair Rehab Treatments: DO or DON’T?

If you’ve dropped by Pinterest lately or skimmed through a beauty magazine, you’ve likely seen your fair share of DIY hair tips telling you to drench your locks in all kinds of food ingredients, including mayo, avocado, eggs, yogurt, and honey. While some of these can help moisturize hair to a minor degree, they don’t amount to the types of ingredients that are used in even the most basic haircare formulas today in terms of softening and smoothing dry/damaged hair. Factor in the unpleasant aroma + messy application and it’s easy to see why you’re better off sticking to your common conditioning treatments.

That said, we understand that sometimes you feel the need to try something different and change it up a bit so if you are adamant on trying a DIY hair treatment, opt for coconut oil. Not only is it rich in fatty acids to moisturize and help smooth damaged hair, it’s also less difficult to work with than other food-related hair treatments—plus it smells a whole lot better!

Apply the coconut oil to dry hair, but only to the ends. Avoid getting it any closer to your scalp or on the roots, because it will look really greasy. Leave it on overnight and put a towel over your pillow to avoid staining. In the morning, wash with your normal shampoo and conditioner, and you’re on your way to softer, smoother, shinier hair!
